Addiction

CONTACT US

Addiction is a complex and chronic brain disorder characterised by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences. It is often associated with substance use, such as drugs and alcohol, but can also involve behaviours like gambling, gaming, or shopping.

Addiction fundamentally alters brain structure and function, affecting areas responsible for reward, motivation, memory, and decision-making.

Causes of Addiction

At the core of addiction is the brain's reward system, primarily involving the neurotransmitter dopamine. When a person engages in a rewarding activity, dopamine is released, creating feelings of pleasure and reinforcing the behaviour.

In addiction, this system becomes hijacked. Repeated exposure to addictive substances or behaviours causes the brain to produce less dopamine or reduce the number of dopamine receptors, leading individuals to seek higher amounts to achieve the same effect, known as tolerance.

Several factors contribute to the development of addiction, including genetics, environment, mental health, and early exposure:
• Genetic predispositions can make some individuals more susceptible to addiction.
• Environmental factors, such as peer pressure, trauma, and stress, play a significant role.
• Mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, often co-occur with addiction, creating a vicious cycle.
• Early exposure to addictive substances like drugs and alcohol, or behaviours, particularly during adolescence when the brain is still developing, increases the risk of addiction.

Whatever the cause, it is important to identifythe root issue in order to offer a tailored treatment plan. This issue can be identified through our face-to-face counselling sessions.

How to Recognise Addiction

Recognizing addiction involves identifying patterns of behaviour where individuals prioritise the addictive substance or activity over other aspects of life, such as work, relationships, and health. Symptoms can include an inability to stop, withdrawal symptoms, neglect of responsibilities, and continued use despite knowing the harm it causes.

If you feel impacted by any of these symptoms, it’s important to get in touch with a mental health professional to prevent addiction from impacting your life further. Midland Counselling offers face-to-face treatment in our Mullingar office.

Treating Addiction

Treatment for addiction is multifaceted and tailored to the individual. It often includes a combination of medical detoxification, rehabilitation, therapy, medication, and support groups:
• Medications can aid in managing withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
• Support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA), provide a community of individuals facing similar challenges, fostering mutual support and accountability.
• Counselling is effective in helping individuals recognise and change harmful thought patterns and behaviours.
Those dealing with addiction may often face social stigma on top of an already debilitating mental illness. Accessing counselling can also be beneficial when it comes to dealing with the impact of this social pressure.
