Bereavement & Loss

CONTACT US

Bereavement and loss refer to the profound sorrow and emotional distress experienced following the death of a loved one. This natural response to loss, known as grief, encompasses a range of feelings, including sadness, anger, guilt, and despair.

The grieving process is highly individual and can vary widely in duration and intensity. While most people gradually adjust to their loss over time, some may experience complicated grief, where the pain remains intense and debilitating for an extended period.

The Stages of Grief

Bereavement typically involves several stages, often described by the Kubler-Ross model as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

However, not everyone goes through these stages linearly, and some may skip stages or revisit them at different times. Healthy grief allows individuals to eventually find a new sense of normalcy and continue with life while still cherishing the memory of the deceased.

If you’re having trouble processing the loss of a loved one, Midland Counselling offers face-to-face treatment in our Mullingar office. Talking therapy can be hugely beneficial to the healing process.

Signs of Prolonged/Complicated Grief

Complicated grief, also known as prolonged grief disorder, occurs when the natural grieving process is hindered, and the individual remains stuck in a state of mourning. This can lead to persistent feelings of intense sorrow, yearning, and preoccupation with the deceased. Complicated grief can severely impact daily functioning, relationships, and overall mental and physical health.

Several factors can contribute to complicated grief, including the sudden or traumatic nature of the death, a lack of social support, preexisting mental health conditions, and unresolved issues with the deceased. Symptoms may include:
• extreme focus on the loss
• intense longing for the deceased
• intense loneliness
• feeling that life is meaningless
• difficulty accepting the death
• a sense of numbness or detachment from reality
• difficulty reintegrating, such as problems engaging with friends, pursuing interests, planning for the future

Support for Complicated Grief

Addressing complicated grief often requires professional intervention. Therapy, particularly grief counselling and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), can support individuals process their emotions, address any underlying issues, and develop coping strategies. Support groups also offer a space for sharing experiences and receiving mutual support from others who understand the pain of loss.
