Stress

CONTACT US

Stress is a natural response to challenging or threatening situations, often described as the body's way of reacting to demands or pressures. It triggers a cascade of physical and emotional reactions, primarily driven by the release of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. When stress becomes excessive or prolonged, you risk exposing yourself to potential mental and physical health problems.

Understanding the Source of Stress

Understanding stress involves recognising its sources, which can be diverse and vary widely among individuals. Common stressors include:
• work pressures
• financial difficulties
• relationship problems
• major life changes such as moving or losing a loved one.

Additionally, internal factors like unrealistic expectations, perfectionism, and negative self-talk can significantly contribute to stress levels. These internal factors can be cause by things like upbringing, the way we are taught to manage stress, or mental/physical illness.

Side Effects of Stress

While short-term stress can be beneficial by sharpening focus and enhancing performance, chronic stress can lead to increased risk of various health problems, including:
• anxiety
• depression
• cardiovascular diseases
• weakened immune function leading to more easily becoming sick
• hypertension
• heart attack
• stroke
• digestive problems

If you feel as though you’re struggling with these issues, we can help. Effective stress management takes time, but our face-to-face counselling sessions can equip you with the tools to minimise these potential health risks and identify the sources of excessive stress in your life.

Dealing with Stress

Effective stress management is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. It involves a combination of techniques aimed at reducing the impact of stressors and enhancing the body's ability to cope with stress.

One foundational strategy for dealing with stress is time management, which helps prioritise tasks, set realistic goals, and allocate time for relaxation and self-care. Breaking tasks into manageable steps and avoiding procrastination can alleviate the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Physical activity is also a powerful stress reliever. Regular exercise reduces stress hormones, stimulates the production of endorphins (natural mood lifters), and improves sleep quality. Activities like yoga, walking, and swimming can be particularly beneficial for reducing stress.

Mindfulness and relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation, can also significantly reduce stress. These practices help calm the mind, lower heart rate, and decrease blood pressure, creating a sense of inner peace and relaxation.
